I am thinking about adding pneumatic wheels to my grill. This should make it easier to roll through grass and other rough areas. Has anyone else done this?

I upgraded the casters on my grill shortly after I got it, so it would roll easier over a wood deck or uneven surface. The new casters are 5Â, which is 2Â larger then the standard ones that come with the grill, they are also about 1/4" wider too. The mounting style of the new casters was the same as what came with the grill, so it was easy to upgrade. The overall designs of these casters are much stronger and allowed for a larger flush mounting surface between the casters and the frame of the grill. Cost was only about $25 and I'm glad I did it. With the larger diameter wheels, rolling it over any cracks or over a wood deck is much easier.

Not sure about pneumatic wheels. What size are you looking at and how would you mount them?

I looked on the Internet for quite some time but was unable to find casters with the same mounting configuration as the casters that came with our grill. Where did you get yours?

How has the ergonomics of cooking on the grill changed now that it is 2" further off the ground? I'm of average height and could see raising the grill making a big difference.

I think this kind of thing could happen to anyone using any brand gas grill, so it's a good warning to check all connections carefully before grilling. I confess I only checked the tank to regulator and regulator hose for leaks prior to my first usage of the Virco. The manual did say to also check the gas control valves, but I couldn't figure out how to get to them. I guess I could see them from underneath if I lay on my back, so that's what I'll do next time. I also recall that propane is heavier than air, unlike natural gas, which is lighter than air. So the propane can settle in low places and collect and then explode. Also, as I have recently noticed, a new steel propane container may react with the odorant in the propane charge, and the result is that it can be harder to detect leaks. Lots of people are probably buying new propane tanks with OPD valves rather than retrofit their old ones, so perhaps some extra caution is needed for the first tankful or so. All this makes me wonder if perhaps I may be installing the natural gas conversion kit sooner than I expected...;-) Here is a link that might be useful: Propane safety

I'll try and post a picture of my grill tomorrow but I did compare both the Virco and the smaller and larger model of the Member's Mark before purchasing. I would say that if you want a smaller grill and don't mind not having a built in smoker box and extra burner then go with the Virco. For me, I wanted a grill that I could easily build in later and that was comparable in size and quality to the Viking and DCS units I had been looking at for comparison. I really had no idea that this grill was as nice as it is. My wife had originally spotted it and told me to go look at it. I was very skeptical because first off it was at Sam's Club (no offense) and second for the price, $1,499.00, I figured it could not compare with the high end units I had been looking at for around $5000. After seeing the unit and thoroughly checking it out I was proven wrong. It is solid double walled stainless throughout (drawers, cart, lid and cooking grates) and looks similar to the Virco unit only larger. I would say aside from size the other differences are that the lid is double walled stainless throughout and will probably not discolor from heat as easily. There is a seperate burner for the smoker box and this burner is stainless also. The remaining burners are heavy porcelain coated cast iron and appear very well made. There are two central pull out drawers on ball bearing glides and a seperate door on both the right and left of the drawers with the right door containing a paper towel holder and spice rack. The propane tank is fully enclosed on the left and is on a locking pull out slide. There is a seperate brass side burner and a rotissere with a steel encased motor unit that I haven't tried yet. There are also two stainless side shelves on each side that fold up and lock. The unit is for the most part, welded and comes fully assembled on a steel pallet that was forklifted on the back of my pick up. It weighs about 450 lbs and you'll need at least 4 strong friends to help you unload it! That's the long version and again I am very happy with it so far and would encourage you to go and look at each of the units for comparison. The Virco is a really nice unit and I know it's been beat to death already on this board but between the smaller Member's Mark and the Virco, I would have probably gone with the Virco. For me, I wanted a bit bigger grill with the built in smoker unit and something that I could build in later on and was willing to spend the extra money. Good luck!

Last year I did a search for built in projects and could never find any info. I've even posted on here acouple of times to see if anyone had done this before. To no avail, I couldn't get to one DIY project for grills. So, I hope that my completed project will be able to help others out there contemplating building there own built in brick grill. Memorial Day BBQ was great. I rotissereed two teriyaki injected chickens and they were great. We also grilled some pork ribs, rib-eyes, kabobs, and pork loins. Everything was superbs. The grill is better that I ever expected. I literally turned on the rotisseree and walked away until they were done. Couple of questions. I cleaned and oiled the covered but still have that browning problem othere have talked about. Whats the best way to clean the cover. Thanks for visiting.

got the new one last night. put it together this morning. (71 min 38 sec from first cracking box open to cleaning up the trash) starting to put the oil on to season the iron. tahnks for the tips. burners flame to full power and i know the insides of my grill. the last one, i couldn't get the propane tank to hang on the guage, the top hooks were pointing down instead of up. found a few other discrepencies from the old one to this new one. suggest anyone that buys a pre assembled grill, any grill, go over it step by step in the instruction manual to make sure it is put together 100% correct. mine were all minor flaws, but someone might get one with a hose but on wrong or whatever. found out sam's pays the stock boys 25 dollars to put some together. faster they do it the more it is worth to them. guy i talked to says he has got it down to 35-40 minutes per grill. that is awfully fast to put your trust in that he didn't miss anything. The type of casters and mounting used on this grill is a ÂThreaded Stem CasterÂ. You want to make sure you get the same size stem as on the original casters so they can be screwed into the grill frame without any modifications to the frame. I think the stem size is 3/8Â-16, but I would recommend that you double check with one of the casters off your grill. Originally I started off looking for a 6Â caster, but I was unable to find any that size that had the same size threaded stem as on the original casters. 5Â casters were the largest I found with the same size thread stem.

I purchased 2 standard casters and 2 casters with brakes (mounted to the front of the grill), and all the casters swivel.

I did need to make one modification to the stem length of the new casters. The maximum stem length that could be used on the grill was 7/8Â and all the casters I found came with a 1-1/2Â stem length. I just used a hacksaw to cut the stem to the required lengthÂ One tip when cutting this threaded stem, or any other thread rod, is to first thread on a standard nut (the correct size) past where you plan to cut. After you cut the threaded stem, unthread the nut. This will help straighten out the ends of the threads that may have folded over, making it easier to thread the stem of the casters into grill frame.

If you want to try and find a local supplier, try using Yahoo / Yellow Pages. Just entered in the name of the city and state, and do a search for ÂcastersÂ. If that donÂt work, try doing a search for Âmaterial handling equipmentÂ. This is what I did; I also looked in my local yellow pages telephone book. My purchase was made at General Caster Service Inc., 31301 Stephenson Hwy, Madison Heights, MI 48071 Phone: (248) 588-8990, if that is any help.

As for the height of the grill, that did not change that much. Keep in mine that even though the casters are 2Â bigger, they only raise the grill 1Â not 2 (1Â above the axle and 1Â below for a total of 2Â). Plus the design of these new casters fit fully flush at the mounting point at the base of the stem. This was a big improvement over how the original casters were made. As such, with the improved design on these 5" casters it only raised the overall height of my grill by 3/4Â over the standard 3Â casters that came with the grill.
