Emily, you've gotten quite a few methods, so I'll just add mine. Smiles. I hate when stuff falls through the grate so I do have a nice basket now that I can use,so that the heat actually touches the food. Before I had one I would slice the wedges of potatoes and thread them onto skewers. I have some nice metal flat ones that are perfect, transmit the heat and the potatoes/food stays on them. If using the bamboo ones or round ones, I use two paralell skewers so that the stuff won't turn around and around when you turn them over. So, I brush them with oil or butter and herbs if I want, grill them on a nice hot fire and then move the skewers to a not heated side or up on the rack for baking potatoes and cook till done, then put them back down to the hot fire briefly to crisp up. Sounds a little complicated, but it's really not and works for all kinds of food that takes a bit to cook. I like stuff in packets, but it's not the same as over the flame/heat. I've also just put them up on that upper rack or on the not heated part and let them cook first then put them on the hot part to get them crispy and grilled. The skewers are the main thing. Keep your eyes peeled for metal skewers if you don't have any.

Hi, We got old grills left by previous owners. We thought we would replace the grates but seems grates themselft are super expensive. We have kingsford charcoal grill and char boiler (smoker). Now I am completely new to grill owning, just ate and may be cooked a little on grills but never owned before. So do you think it is economic to throw these 2 and get a new one? My spouse wants newer one may be less cheaper but I feel dumping itself is a pain and this is probably good quality grill. Any suggestions.

Dan1888 Sounds good. I like that. I have another problem. Due to the reconstruction of the house, the barbeque was stored outside and was covered. Unfortunatley, the cover blew off during a rain and some moisture got inside. If you look at the pictures, you can see that a little rust developed both on the grill and on one of the grill grates. How can I remove the rust without damaging the grill or the grill grate? Speaking of the grill grates. It looks to me like it would be very easy to damage the grill grates, especially with the stainless steel spatulas they sell for flipping the burger over, etc. I bought one of these spatulas. I also bought tongs that have what appears to be plastic tips (designed for use with the barbeque) that look a little less likely to scratch the grates. Is scratching the grates with spatulas and other stainless steel tools nothing to worry about? I am going to cure/season the grates with vegetalbe oil. That should make the food stick less to the grill. Finally, the company that made this barbeque grill recommends that before grilling that the grate be washed with warm, soapy water. What are your thoughts about that? Thanks.
