Travertine around base of walls?

Posted by andreadeg (My Page) on

My contractor mentioned today that he thought it would look nice to have travertine around the base of the walls instead of paint grade wood trim. He would ask the tiler to cut a 2" of travertine to go around the base of the walls. Our plan is to paint the walls (not tile them) and then intall crown moulding, possibly chair rail moulding, and definitely base trim moulding. The plan was for wood base moulding.

Any thoughts on this? Is it worth the expense for the look?

We are doing travertine in our bathroom and painting the walls. Our contractor mentioned this also to us, but we chose to stick with painted wood trim because it comes in 12ft lengths instead of 18" length travertine pieces around the room. I guess I liked the one continuous piece look versus a bunch of pieces.

It all comes down to the look you want.

Thanks for your input! I will stick with my original design plan. The wall color and the floor will be fairly similar and I like the idea of having a visual break between the two. I'll stick with baseboard molding. Thanks again!

FWIW, we did the travertine at the base of the walls. I just used half pieces (about 8" tall). The grout lines match the floor. Could have done some sort of detail to the tiles (beveled top or the like) but didn't. I think it works b/c the tub skirt at one end is tiled, as is the shower curb/wall at the other. Plus the ceilings are 9'6" so it doesn't feel too tall.
