Bill Vincent--tile question for you

I was reading an earlier entry about fine cracks in some tile flooring and you had responded. We have been in our house about 9 yrs. and have had sone of our subway tiles in our shower that meets the bottom of our shower door develop cracks. They began as very fine hairline cracks on two tiles and then spread over the next tile beside it. We removed the shower door and are having a tile man replace those tiles. After reading what you had said in an earlier post, I'm afraid the new tiles will crack. These particular cracks are on the built up base that surrounds the shower where the door rests. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You're right. You need to do more than replace those tiles. I'd be willing to bet the curb is framed in wood, and water's getting into it, causing the wood to swell, thereby cracking the tile. This is not something to play with. IF this is the case, it could cause much more serious problems over time. One way or the other, you need to find out what's causing the problem for sure. I'd be willing to bet that's it, though.

bill vincent--Would this be something our builder would know or a tile person? Also how would this be determined for sure? Thank you so much for your time in this matter.

Bill--another question. I spoke with the builder who said the curb is indeed wood. Can only the curb be replaced? The floor in the shower has concrete or thinset under the tile and I would hate to have to rip all of that out. Our tile man can't be reached for 2 weeks. He is hunting. I am hoping there is a way to determine if indeed water has gotten under it. Sure don't want to take it out if not. Thank you.

RE: Bill Vincent--tile question for you

If water got into the curb, it'll do it again once the curb is replaced, and it'll most likely be even worse, if you don't take out the pan, and about 18-24" all the way around the walls, and completely redo the pan. The only way to know for sure is to take it apart and see if there's water getting at the framing. You MIGHT be able to see it if you take the tile (or whatever) off the OUTSIDE face and strip that down to the studs, but that's not a guarantee.

Thank you Bill. Hopefully I can have someone take a look at it soon. And I thought I was just going to have a couple of tiles to replace and be done with it. I should have known better. I really appreciate you having taken time to help me.
