Tipping the contractor

Is there a general rule or % for tipping the contractor's crew? So far, I have 2 workers here everyday that I would like to tip. The plumber is here every now and then, as well as the electrician and then the tile man will come nexxt week. The job in NY $20,000+ if that makes a difference. They are on week 3. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'll tell you this much-- whatever you give them will be very much appreciated. I've said many times in here-- when I was on payroll working for another contractor, it meant more for me to get 20.00 as a tip from the homeowner than 100.00 as a bonus in my check, because it showed the appreciation and recognition for a job well done.

And providing cool drinks on a hot day, or a pizza or subs helps too. Putting on a pot of coffee is nice too in the morning. Treat them well and they will treat you well and will do the little extra things that make a difference.

I leave them a cooler filled with ice and bottled water everyday, but am gone during the day as I'm at work. Is that enough? Should I leave them more? The main worker is diabetic and told me he only wants water when he first started, as I asked. They bring their own coffee & lunch everyday.

Sure...that is fine. Those are just suggestions, but not meant to be done all the time. No one would expect having lunches provided every day. But when the opportunity arises, you can do something else. If you are home one day, buy them a pizza for lunch.

Back to tipping and giving cash...is there a % you use? I know it depends on the job and the person, but for those of you who have tipped, how much did you do and how big was your job??? Apple

If the contractor owns the business, I don't know why he'd be tipped. I'd tip the workers depending on how much and how well and for how long. $20-$100? I also give them coffee and pizza and deli sandwiches - I've always done that but don't know if it helps in terms of the quality of work.
