Advice on Major Tile Mistake

| I have been agonizing over what to do for tile for a year. I finally decided to lay out the money for handmade ceramic tile. It was not cheap. I ordered it, waited 8 weeks, and when it came I realized that instead of putting in the order as sqaure feet the company put it in as per piece. That means they made all the bullnose tile but only a fraction of the field tile. The company wants to fix it by remaking the field tile.
My concern is: This is all handmade tile and there are variations in glaze from batch to batch. Since I have all the bullnose from batch one and if they ship me all the field pieces from batch two, there will be a noticeable difference in the glaze. It will look like I have a weird border.
I hate being difficult but I told them I would only be happy with the whole order being remade. Is that unreasonable? What would you do? |

| If there is any possibility that the glazes could be different, then by all means have them remake the entire batch. I had a similar issue a few years ago, several of the tiles arrived broken due to poor packaging. I discussed with them how they glaze, and they admitted they use small batches and don't book their portions as they go along. Because of that I insisted that they refire a new batch instead of just firing replacements. It took a bit of arm wrestling, but they complied. |

| mongoct, I think you are right. In fact about 30% of my field tiles are broken too because of poor packaging. The whole experience has been kind of frustrating. |

If they think they can match the original shipment, then let them. But let them know if it's even a shade off it's not acceptable. If they can't meet that criteria, then they need to remake the whole order. Let THEM make the decision, based on the fact that the order won't be accepted until that criteria is met. |

| Just want to add my two cents to Bill's advice: Make sure you make it clear that YOU will decide if the color is a shade off or not. Otherwise, they could say when it arrives that it "matches perfectly" when you don't think that it does. I'd put it in writing and have them sign; my guess is that they will then decide to just re-do the whole thing. |

| I agree with Bill. Frustrations aside, honest mistakes do happen by well intended people. I usually allow a vendor/contractor to make good when they acknowledge the issue and offer to do so. With that being said, I would also really manage everyone's expectations and make it clear that an exact match is just that - EXACT. Hope it all works out :)! |
