What get's caulked in a bathroom?

I know this may seem like a silly question, but what do you caulk in a bathroom?

What's the best caulk to use?

How long does caulk normally last? Is there any that is truly mildew/mold resistent?

In general, you caulk any gaps that you don't want water to get through and any gaps that are unsightly. Said gaps are nearly always where you have changes in plane.
Examples:
-where tub deck and surround meet (whether tile, solid surface panels, acrylic, or whatever)
-corners of tub or shower (regardless of surface unless you've got a one-piece fiberglass surround that has no gap in the corners)
-where vanity backsplash meets wall
-where baseboards and door/window casings meet wall
-where baseboards meet floor
-where tub meets floor

Things I wouldn't caulk:
-around base of toilet (then you wouldn't see any leaks if you had them)
-gap between vanity and wall or vanity and floor

Use siliconized latex caulk.

I generally agree with the response above from weedyacres, except regarding the toilet. The best solution I've heard for this is to caulk around the front and sides, but not the back. That way you have some warning of a leak, but the caulking prevents stray "splashes" from getting under the base in the front portion of the toilet.

great advice, I'll keep this handy!

Unfortunately, our contractor put grout where tub meets floor & it cracked........
He has to come back & correct the blunder!

another caulking question

Hi All,

I was told by my plumber that he has to caulk between the sink and the wall (wainscoting in our case) in order for the bathroom to pass inspection. The problem is that we have a pedestal sink, and I think it is going to look like ass if he puts caulk between the sink and the wall. Our plumber also looked really unhappy when he told me, but there's no way to get around the code.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this so it turns out as unobtrusive and invisible as possible? Here's a picture of our sink:

Portland: You could always just scrape the caulk back out after the inspection.

weedyacres: scraping the caulk off and repainting is our backup plan -- I'm just trying to figure out a way to make this as least painful as possible!

thanks!
