do I need a popup drain for lav sink?

Hi all,

I'm replacing a faucet and noticed a few (more commercial types) don't have the popup assembly and instead have a nice strainer drain cover. After a lifetime of fiddling with malfunctioning popups and never actually filling a bathroom sink (since I've grown up and stopped playing in the sink), what the heck are they for?

This will be in a kid bathroom. Any reason not to forgo the popup and just get a strainer drain? It seems like it would be much better at catching hair and leaves and toothpaste caps and marbles not to mention the aerator screen that I happened to lose down the drain the other day...

Thanks!
