Subway Tile Question

Posted by cedar32 (My Page) on

Not sure where else to post this... We'd like subway tile for our master bath. I've looked at a couple of samples from local tile dealers and Home Depot. The Home Depot tiles seem to be the least expensive ($1.68 a sq ft)... other distributors are $3 and up. I noticed the HD tiles have a slight pinkish tone....
Can people share their experiences / thoughts about what to look for when choosing subway tiles... I like the price of the HD tiles... has anyone used them?

Thanks.

Who is the manufacturer of the tile from Home Depot? The reason I ask is they carry a couple of different brands.

RE: Subway Tile Question

Bill,

From the sample I picked up at HD, the only signs on the back of the tile:
There is a grid pattern, of 4 wide - 4 high on both sides.... in the top corner
of the left side grid pattern it's imprinted with 3"... and the next grid square over is imprinted 6". On the bottom of that grid in each square that makes up the grid is P then 1 then 2. That's it .... no other markings.

sound like anything familiar.... I guess the big question is, are these tiles okay.... has anyone had any issues with them. The price seems pretty good.
Thanks

Not quite sure, but that sounds like American Olean. If so, they shouldn't be a problem. One way or the other, the price you've been given is better than the wholesale price I'D pay. You might have them show you a sample of Daltile's Rittenhouse Square, too.

I hope the HD tiles are worth it because I'm doing my master bathroom in them. For my kitchen though I will be buying my tiles from The Tile Shop, when you open up a cc there you get an additional 15% off. I think before discount they are around $5-$7 sq foot.

RE: Subway Tile Question

I used HD subway tile in my shower, and HD porcelian tile for the rest of the bathroom. I will include a link to the pictures.
The HD white subway tile that my GC installed is decidely not stark white, as I had specified. Not pink though--more of a bone color.
Although it is not the stark white I specified, it certainly something I can live with.

Here is a link that might be useful: Home Depot subway tile shower
