| I am about to have my hall bathroom remodeled. I have to replace the tub and I cannot stand the tile around it, so I am considering asking for a tub surround, instead of tile. I hate cleaning tile because of the grout.
Are the surrounds a good option? I've seen some fancy ones at Home Depot with built in shelves. They look much easier to clean than tile. Any advice/experiences with the surrounds? Should I get one or should I stick with tile? These are examples of the surrounds I saw: http://www.homedepot.com/Bath-Bath-Tubs-Showers-Whirlpool-Tubs-Bath-Tu bs/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbzc0/R-100414096/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId =10051&catalogId=10053 This reno has to be as low budget as possible, because I have so much else to do in this house. | The surrounds are very good. I've had one for years and it looks like the day I had it installed. I'm now replacing it as I want to update but I'm still getting a surround. I'm getting the Swanstone that looks like solid surface. I would not get the cheapest but you should be able to get a nice one for under 600.00 |

| I'm in the tile business so my opinion is biased, but the look of tile is so timeless and elegant. And these days there are so many large format tiles (= less grout) which are affordable. Both the tiles and the setting and grouting products have evolved so much that you can get the look you want with minimal maintenance. |

| While there's nothing at all wrong with an honest surround--I had cultured marble for years and it was great--personally I hate those fake tile ones. They always look to me like Bathfitters' cheapout competition. If you want to do a surround, I would do slabs of whatever material, not the ultra-molded ones, but that's just a taste question, really. Structurally I'm sure it will be fine. |

| We have slabs of cultured marble in our shower. I will admit it is easy to clean but to me, it looks 1980's dated. The tub is one continuous piece of cultured marble/plastic looking stuff as well. This is the primary reason we are remodeling the bath at this time. |
