Bathroom Through Closet

My designer is recommending I put my new master bath so that I walk through a walk-in-closet to get to the bathroom. This seems like a needless journey everytime I need to do something in the bathroom. Plus my closet even with built in shelving is often messy and I would have to go through that mess each time. Am I off-base or missing something?

I'd love walking between two his & hers closets to get to the bath, assuming both have attractive doors -- But walking straight through one that's likely to be messy? Not in a million years! |

Ditto: if it's walking down a hallway of sorts that's flanked by closets (with doors) that would be ok. But walking through an open closet could make the bathroom seem like a poorly-designed afterthought addition.

I don't like that idea either!!

It depends on HOW messy. We have a walk-through closet that leads to the bathroom. (The bathroom is also accessible from the hall; it's big, and has two doors.) I like having the buffer between our bedroom and the bathroom. You like privacy in a bathroom that's not always afforded you when someone's right in the next room. Closets can be fun if you think of them as tiny rooms, and because they're small, they're not expensive to do up nicely. I actually like our closet, because it's bright from two recessed ceiling lights, it has a small, high window, the doors and window have nice trim around them, and the floor is a nice hardwood. We put up wire racks and have a couple of dressers in it, so it's kind of organized. Even though it's usually somewhat cluttered, it's an enjoyable space to pass through,

I sort of have a similar situation for my guest bathroom, which has two doors. One door leads to the guest bedroom. The other door leads to the laundry room. So in order to get to this downstairs 3/4 bath you have to either go through the guest room (set up as a sitting room with day bed unless there is a guest) or you have to go through the laundry room. If I could have had a different set up I would. But was there a better alternative? Not really, unless I wanted to give up on something else (like locating our dry sauna in the space that used to be the half bath). So I guess what I'm saying is, is there a better alternative without giving something else up that is more important? How big is the closet?

Our master bedroom has a short hall to the bathroom (about 6 feet long) with closets on either side. The closets had bifolds when we moved in, and we're replacing with pocket doors. I wish the closets were bigger, proper walk-ins like I think you would be able to have -right?- because it seems an ideal set-up to me (mine are only about 5.5' square). As eggandart mentioned, there's the privacy gained by a bit of separation between the bedroom and bath. Also, if your closets are true walk-ins, they become dressing areas. And having the dressing area with clothes and hampers between the bed and shower seems really practical to me. But definitely put doors on the closet(s). Can you post a floor plan and dimensions so we can see the space?

I have a friend who has that arrangement - just as eggandart49 describes. She's a CMKBD so I guess the idea must be acceptable from a professional design perspective. Her closet isn't messy though - she does those nice closet organization systems along with kitchens and bathrooms.

In the middle of our build and we walk through his and her closets with doors through an arched doorway into the master bath. We love it.

We are just about to start getting estimates for the same thing. I would love to see pics (am not bothered by mess if that's an issue) if anyone has this set-up. Personally, I'm not sure why a walk-in closet would be messy- right now my Master BR gets loaded with clothes, cuz I have no place else to put them!

| We have a bathroom that we can access through our closet. It's great!

Goldust, The pictures do help- thanks! Was your closet a previous BR? It seems very similar to what we plan to do (If estimates for addition come in affordable). Our present Master BR is ~ 5X9, and we are thinking of making it the walk-in closet and accessing a new BR where the present window is - roughly in the centre of the 9' wall- hadn't thought of a pocket door... ummm

The closet was previously a small bathroom off the master bedroom. Our bedroom door is to the left (inside the closet) from the photo viewpoint. The old bathroom butted up against another small bathroom. We took the small bathroom and made it a closet. The sink is where the old shower used to be in the second bathroom. The pocket door is great! We took one of the doors we removed and turned it into a pocket door with a prefab kit that we reinforced to make the wall less hollow. The door takes up no room at all.

i wouldn't mind having an entry from the closet to the bath, but NOT as a sole means to enter the room. the wonderful thing about being a designer for others is that you don't have to worry about living in the space yourself.

LOL Kate. Designers are considered a huge waste of money around here. We do have a main entrance into the bathroom that doesn't require a trip through the closet. I agree with Kate. If the closet is the only entrance into the bathroom, forget it.
