how to determine correct faucet reach

I am struggling with the sink and faucet selection for my powder room. This is a very small room and I want to keep the vanity as shallow as possible. I don't want to use the integral sink/top that comes with most smaller vanities. I was thinking about a wall mount faucet to conserve counter depth. The ones I see have a 7-8 inch reach from the wall. Should the spout end right over the drain? How do you know if a faucet and sink will work together properly?

Another question - is there minimum counter space needed in front of and behind the sink for an undermount? I'm planning on quartz tops.

Help!!!
