Need help with whirlpool tub.

I just bought my first house and the whirlpool tub needs some work. The tub is surrounded by tile, I'm wondering how I can figure out if there is a trap door built into the tile. If it was sealed with chalk how will I know it is there? There is not a door on the outside wall or in the other connecting wall, so if it isn't built into the tile then I'm kind of screwed. Any suggestions would be a life savor!

Maybe post pictures...it might help...do you at least know which side of the tub the motor is located?
