3/8 or 1/2 inch plywood

Hi,

Can I use 3/8 inch plywood over my sub floor, under 1/4 inch cement board, or do I need 1/2 inch ?

My tile is a standard ceramic 12inch square tile. My general contractor is trying to tell me I'm fine with just the sub floor, but because of this forum, I know better ;~)

Tile people , where are you, Bill and Mongo ?
The sub floor is 5/8 ply in fair to poor condition . I know I need another layer before the 1/4 cement board , but am not sure of the thickness?
