please offer help and advice on shower remodel

Hi - We recently purchased a home that is built on a slab (circa 1980). We're having all of the concrete floors polished. Currently, the shower has a hard foam pan that is mortared to the slab. I would like to remove it and have the shower floor polished (with a grit for slip resistance) so the whole space flows together. I'm wondering if anyone knows: If I remove the shower pan and have the floor polished, how do I seal the joint between the floor and the wall to make it waterproof? I know that normally, a membrane is placed behind the tiles and under the floor, but we do not have that option since our slab is existing. I posted pictures of the current bathroom on a blog: http://bathroomshowerdemo.wordpress.com/

I would welcome any and all advice on any aspect of the remodel! Thanks!
