Replacing the bathroom sinks without new countertops?

Hi there,

I searched and found only one post about this topic but I have a couple more questions to ask about this. Hope you can help. Thanks in advance!

OK yes, I am still working on cleaning up the kitchen cabinets and WILL work on the foyer flooring soon, but I'm already researching on how I can improve the small bathrooms in my house :)

So my house has 1 half bathroom and 1 jack & jill bath and that's the main bathroom. All of them have cultured marble countertops with undermount sinks. I have no big problem with the countertops although they're a little dated. But then we did change the faucets and now there's a brownish circle where the old faucets were. I wonder how I can clean that. Or I googled and found some people painted over the cultured marble tops. Has anyone done that? Will it last? Any ideas?

Also, I would like to change out the undermount sinks to drop-in ones if possible. These sinks are scratched and rusty where the overflows are. But my main question is I don't know if I can find a sink that fits in that hole. The countertops have an oval opening that is about 16.5" X 13.5". When I look it up, I saw on both homedepot and lowes website that most sinks are bigger than this. But then I saw on the specs that there is also a "cut out measurement" or "inner measurement", should this actually be the right measurement? I am confused. I just hope that I can find a drop-in sink that can fit in my current hole. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have never changed a sink before. Hope someone can help.

And yes, you will probably ask why I don't just replace all the counter tops as well. We thought about that but it seems not cheap. And even the half bath, I initially thought I can buy a 1-piece vanity top but then found out it's not possible cuz that top is not quite the standard size (depth-wise). And the main bath has 2 single vanity tops that are 60" and 72", seems like these countertops are not cheap either because of the size. Plus the cultured marble top is not in extremely bad shape, so I hope that I can simply change out the sinks.

Hope someone can give me some insight on this. Thanks for reading my post!

Are you in an urban area where you might find a stone/tile store that carries pre-fab counters? They aren't very expensive, and come with finished granite/marble with edges/backsplash/sink built in. We saw them in many sizes and many different materials over the weekend at a place called Granite Expo in Emeryville, CA, but I imagine they exist everywhere.

Here is a link that might be useful: Granite Expo

Keep an eye on Craigslist. Around here I regularly see people posting brand new vanity tops for much less than retail.

What's your depth issue? Are you more deep or less deep than standard? By how much?

    debrak2008,

I have to figure out how to post a pic here first :P. But the countertop is those yellowish cultured marble top (you see a lot of those in the older houses) but it's not one-piece. The sink is an undermount sink, so it's just like the typical granite top with undermount sink you see now. BUT mine is not granite top obviously, and the sink is rusty and scratched.

    sjhockeyfan and weedyacres,

Thanks for your link! Yes I looked on craigslist and saw some ads for prefab granite tops too. And my friend told me about this too. But my problem is I can't find my size, esp. the 72 inch SINGLE sink countertop... :(. And if I custom made that one, it's expensive. The worst is that I need one 60 inch (I found that this countertop is the only one that's the most typical size) and one 72 inch that's matching right, cuz they're in the same jack & jill bathroom!

For the 36 inch countertop for the half bath, the problem is the depth is 1 inch more shallow than the typical tops, so it's 20 inch. And I can't go any deeper because the top is right next to the door opening so 21" countertop won't work!

So yes, my house has some strange bathrooms and I figured either we spent more money to hire someone to renovate (but we don't have that funds now) the bathrooms, or we try to make small changes. Of course, I wish I could be as handy as most of the members here then the problem can be solved easily :(

Anyways, thanks for all your answers! Please do share if you have any more insights. Thanks again!

When you post, there is an "Image file to upload" option that allows you to upload a photo from your computer's hard drive to that post.

If you have the photos on a web hosting site like photobucket or flickr, you can add the following HTML code to your post for each photo you want to post:

    <IMG SRC="paste photo url here">

Paste the url for the photo from photobucket or flickr or wherever in between the quotation marks in place of the red font.

Don't invest anything in your cultured marble tops. If I may be blunt, they are junk. No painting, no stain removal, no nothing.

Take some cash and some dimensions to a granite fabricator and look in the remnants. Vanity remnants are fabricator profits leaning against a rack and can only be turned into money when folks like you come along. Play the budget card heavy and go just before lunch. Maybe someone's hungry.

As far a I can tell, absolutely no one has answered this man's question. Everyone has just gravitated to his countertop, which he specifically indicated he didn't want to change out. Is there anyone at all that can answer his intended question?

I did answer the OP's question. There is no way old cultured marble countertops can have replacement sinks installed cost effectively. I replace sinks for a living, so I'm kinda familiar.
