Is a new shower pan needed if you want to change the tile on it?

Such a awful tiling job was done on one of my bathrooms that the bath needs to be taken down to the studs and new sheetrock and tile installed. We have 2 x 2 mosaic tile on floor and rise of a shower pan. Is there any way to remove the tile from an acrylic pan and re tile it, or does it need to be ripped out and replaced with a new pan generally? Thanks for any help!

Yes. There's no good way to remove tile that won't damage the waterproofing.

Is this a manufactured pan? Not this one specifically, but one like it?

If it truly is a manufactured pan, some use epoxy thinset to tile over acrylic. If you can get the tile off without damaging the pan and then clean up any residual thinset without damaging the pan, then yes, you can retile it.

Might just be semantics, but if you indeed have "sheetrock" as the tile backer board on the tiled walls of your shower surround, look into a code compliant and more durable product to use in it's place when you remodel. Cement board, etc.
