Rain Head and Handheld Help

I just finished a master bath remodel. I bought a rain head and a hand held and had them both installed. When I turn on the shower, they both come on. Not what I expected. I wanted some kind of shut off or a way to control which one I wanted to use. Is there a way to add something to either one or both to make this happen? Right now the rain head works great and the hand held has a light drizzle. Please help!! Thank you in advance.

There are diverter valves that can direct water to one or the other or both, but the ones I know of need to be installed behind the wall. It might be easier to add something to the handheld so you could turn it on/off separately, but then you will still have the issue of when it is on you have both at the same time.
