Frameless Shower Door vs Waterproof Membrane

I can't seem to find concise info on the mounting of frameless glass shower doors and panels.

What I don't understand is this: given that tile and grout is permeable - how can the mechanism for holding the glass penetrate the waterproofing and not destroy the integrity of the shower?

It seems to me: the mechanism is on the surface of permeable tile and grout so any surface sealant would not prevent water from finding its way into the structure where the membrane was penetrated.

Can anyone enlighten me?

On walls I'll drill a pilot hole for the screw. Shoot a glob of sealant into the hole. Drive the screw. Wipe up the squeeze out.
