Preparing a shower stall for Tile

Ok, I have a couple of questions. We were advised to line the shower wall with tar paper. We were working on this task this morning, and as you "tuck" the tar paper into the corners of the shower, it begins to rip. We were advised to wrap the tar paper around the shower stall horizontally vs vertically so if the water got behind the cement board it would "travel down" the tar paper into the shower pan liner. Any suggestions on what to do about the tar paper ripping? Or how to prevent it?

Second question, the side wall of the shower "walks". At some points it is 60 inches wide and at others it is 59 inches wide. How do we install the cement board most efficiently? (The bottom is 60 inches and towards the middle it gets to 59 inches) Do we make it 59 inches and then fill in the inch gap? And if so, what is the best way to do that?

Thanks for any advice you may have.
