copper vs. vinyl shower pans: does vinyl fail more often?

Hi All,

We are in the midst of a remodel, and we have two copper shower pans as part of our quote since our architect highly recommends them as less likely to fail than vinyl. We have (of course) encountered unexpected costs, and we are wondering if switching to vinyl pans might save us hundreds of dollars. The plumber who is doing the job said that he mostly uses vinyl pans now and has only had one fail in twenty years. However, our GC said that he had two fail on him when he trialed them, and he is worried that we are taking a gamble. We don't want to pay less if we are risking problems, but it also seems as if most people use vinyl pans. Any input would be great!

Thanks so much,

Sara
