concrete under tiles on second floor?

Our contractor demoed the bathrooms on the second floor of our house and found 2 layers of floor tiles. This was not a surprise but I was a bit surprised to see 2 inches of concrete with some kind of wire backing underneath the tiles. House was built in 1960. Right now they are working on getting down to the studs because we have major plumbing changes. Anyone seen this before?

Its a mud bed and it was a typical and very solid way of installing tile--it's pretty much been replaced with cement board.

You were surprised or the contractor was surprised? If it were he that was surprised I would be a little worried!
