Tub-mounted faucet isn't laying flush on tub

We have the Jacuzzi Mio and the plumber said I needed to install our Rohl tub filler and handles on the tub itself, not the tub deck. It's installed now and the fittings are not flush on the tub, there is space between them and the tub. I'm annoyed I didn't insist it was installed on the tub deck, but there isn't anything I can do about it now. The fittings are on the corner of the tub if that makes sense. Is it possible to have these flush with no space?

Here is a tub like yours with tub filler set installed. It's flush. Not sure why yours isn't - it should be:

Perhaps the rough in with the valve was too high and when they installed the trim, it won't sit down.
