Bench seat/Tub caddy - anyone done that?

I'm installing a soaking tub with a raindance shower head. Because of the tight space, I won't be installing a tub deck. the 2.5" top edge of the tub is all the deck there will be.

I thought maybe I can make a mahogany tub caddy - a wood plank that goes across the top of the tub and rests on each side. I think if it's wide enough and thick enough - 8"w x 32" x 1"h - with the bottom routered out to fit perfectly over the tub, that might work as a seat from time to time.

Has anyone tried this? Do you think it would work?
