Help - Mixed caulk

Greetings. Last week I pulled all the caulk from around our tub and was extremely pleased that I so deliberately cleaned to remove soap scum, then bleach solution, waited 24 hours with a fan blowing into the tub to dry it and then caulked it with DAP quik seal. Waited 30 hours and let the family back into the shower. Well, the caulk is still very liquid and not sealing. I called DAP and they said the previous caulk was proably silicon and I have to now use silicon because it "impregnates" the wall and tub surface and won't allow other materials to adhere. So now I need to clean it all out and start over. BUT here is my question. The stuff is so "liquid" than I fear that as I try to clean it I will invariably push some of it into the gap between the tile and tub and so, is there anything I need to do now to chemically remove any remnants of the DAP stuff so the silicon will adhere?

THANKS!
