I used tile and beadboard and I did just butt them together. But I used a PVC style beadboard so water would not react to it.

It depends on the beadboard. If you use beadboard paneling over sheetrock, it should match up pretty well with reference to thickness. If you actually use real beadboard (t&g strips), you may have to determine the thickness of backing plywood require to make the the two come out flush. Either way, it CAN be done with a little planning.

Here is mine. What happened with ours was an after thought on my part. After DH installed all the tile I decided the room needed the beadboard so he just butt it up to it and then I believe corked. If you have any questions, I'll get him to answer for you.

I should have added, we did use the PVC beadboard. I mention that as I think the thickness is different than traditional beadboard.

We used a a rolled edge border tile to set off the subway tile from the beadboard. I'm forgetting the technical name for that kind of edge tile now. Here's a pic:
