Here's what we did with our cherry vanities. Tub deck/wall tile is the same we used in the shower:

That is such a difficult and personal question. If you're starting from scratch -- good luck! There are a gazillion options open to you. I was lucky. We had medium/contemporary cherry cabinets in the house when we purchased, and I didn't see a need to change them when we made changes to our baths and kitchen 13 years later. If you are not restricted by existing fixtures, you have to start somewhere. How about personal preference? Start somewhere and work from there. Nobody here can tell you to go with white (I love white cabinets) or cherry (I love cherry) cabinets.
After that initial decision everything else gets easier. And it's easier for someone else to offer and opinion.

Here is ours with a white cabinet.

We did white subways for the shower walls with a chair rail half-way up and then some 4x4 on a diagonal. The shower floor is honed 1x1 marble for the floor.
