Toilets: Kohler Memoirs or stylish alternative? Help!

Posted by cookingkaren (My Page) on

I was about to order three Kohler Memoirs toilets as I love the look, when a friend said: "Don't. They clog a lot." Argh.

So I checked with another friend who has only Memoirs and she confirmed that hers do clog with certain family members ;o), but she didn't realize it was the toilet.

So my question is:
If you own a Kohler Memoirs, are you happy with it? Does it clog a lot?

If you considered the Memoirs and bought something else, what did you get and do you still like it?

I am hoping there is a stylish alternative for an old house to a good looking clogged toilet.

thanks, Karen

Karen, I have given up on stylish toilets. I have always based my toilet purchases on form.
No more. Not one toilet works as advertised in this house. Five toilets, mostly Kohlers, and many plungers.

I am buying based on function here on out. Sad, but true. No more pretty or cute toilets for me.

Toto Drake. It is ugly. But the reviews on it are fantastic. I don't want my guests having to plunge their waste, and I don't want to plunge my kid's problems or their friends' problems any more.

If money was no object and function didn't worry me, I *might* go for the ultimate in decorative toilets, the Herbeau Dagobert throne:

Karen, we have a Memoirs in our guest bath and in 3 years it's never clogged, not even once.

What I learned when doing research for our bathroom is that a single style can have several model numbers and not all models offer the same quality.

The attached report rates performance of all toilet models and Memoirs ratings are on page 30 and the model numbers are included.

Good luck!

Have you looked at the Toto Promenade, Clayton, and similar traditional designs? I started off wanting Memoirs and ended up with an Eco-Promenade. It was installed in November 2008 and has had absolutely no problems.

I considered the Memoirs but decided against it because of what I'd heard. We went with the Toto Promenade. It's only been installed a couple of days so I don't have any long-term experience with it.

We have a Kohler Memoirs in the Guest Bathroom (Family Room Bathroom) and so far, it has clogged once in 2 years.

I would not consider any other toilet than Toto, they have a great reputation. Check out Terry Love's blog/forum about plumbing and toilets. You'll give up on the "stylish Kohler" idea in a hurry.

We have the Toto Clayton -- two of them! They've never clogged once, despite the very best efforts of certain family members...

And they're nice-looking.

Wow, we installed a Kohler Memoirs toilet in our girls' bathroom in 2007, and have had no problems with it. We have three teenage girls, so you can imagine the use, and not once has it clogged. I'd never even heard that. It has a really powerful flush, in my opinion, considering it is low flow. Sorry others have had problems. We bought it at a plumbing supply store.

Thanks all for your insights. I think I will roll the dice on a memoirs for the powder room so I can get the matching pedestal 24" sink since space is small and go Toto (Clayton caught my eye, but I will check out the Promenade and others too!) for the other two upstairs baths. Ya think I can guide the "offending teen" to mostly use the upstairs toilets? We'll see!!

agree on Toto. Their GMax system seems to be one of the best. That said - they are not perfect either.

We have the pedestal sink and really like it too. OTH, I'm not a Toto fan and went with an American Standard for our master bath.

My 'offending teen' has been instructed to flush midway through. Twice if necessary. If he forgets -- HE plunges. (This is on the Kohlers -- he's never clogged a Toto.)

I have a Memoirs pedestal sink with a Toto Clayton. I love the Toto -- never clogged and I have a daughter that uses half a roll of toilet paper. My father has commented on how well it flushes for so little water used. I would do it again and the styles match well.

My "offending teen" has clogged my two new Totos. Not nearly as often as our previous American Standards. We were plunging at least once a week and now it has been 2 or 3 times in a few months.

I also considered the Memoirs but decided against it after reading the reviews. I put Toto Claytons in both bathrooms and like them very well. The flush is quick and quiet, and no clogging (so far, fingers crossed).

Karen, I love, love, love my Kohler Memoirs toilet. My master bath has been complete since early September and we've been using it since that time. I have a DH who tends to be a toilet-clogger, but we haven't had a single clog with our Memoirs so far. I'm very happy with it. It's very easy to keep clean, too. The toilet was purchased at a local plumbing supply store. I don't know about internet sites, but I am pretty sure that the toilets (and many other items as well) that are purchased at big box stores are lesser quality.

I had the Memoirs and the matching pedestal sink in a small rental bathroom, and I will share that I promised myself never, ever to install a square sharp-edged sink in a small space. I think I still have the bruises ... just fyi for your own space planning! :-)
