Daltile has some classic/basics that are reasonably priced. And they're not too hard to find locally.

Floor and Décor, a newer, I think, nationwide chain, has very nice white hexagon floor tiles in sheets for about $3 a s.f. I bought some and had them installed in our 1922 beach cottage. I haven't seen them yet as we are snowbirding south but I am sure they are quite nice and fitting. I did pick them out and brought them to our place for installation.

Everyone has nice subway tile including Home Depot and Lowes.

Definitely shop the box stores. At most of them, you can buy by the box and/or by the single tile.

You can save on the tile, but I recommend you spend a little extra on the grout. The newer grouts are a little pricier, but you'll save on maintenance.

Another vote for Daltile. Last summer I remodeled my guest bath and used Daltile Arctic White in the tub/shower surround. It's beautiful and something like $3 sq.ft. I would use it again in a heartbeat.

If you have Daltile in your area, they have a massive selection. Mine really only deals with contractors so their customer service is minimal at best, but I've always managed to get samples from them and Home Depot also carries their subways in white and a few other colors.
