Shower tile/cement board questions

Without ranting too much....we opted to get a couple additional quotes on the tile work for our new build. One of the installers came out today and while he was measuring the shower in our master bathroom, he mentioned two things. First, the ceiling over the shower slants because we had to add some duct work up there....it is fairly close to the shower head, and there is no cement board on the ceiling portion...just drywall. He suggested we have that changed out and tile all of it to avoid moisture problems.

Second, we hope to use 12x24 tiles in the shower, and he suggested a 2x6 block around the bottom to support the tile more, so that it doesn't flex in. One of the contractors was at the house and said he'd never heard of that and they had never done that before to his knowledge.

The installer was a little hard to understand, so I just want to make sure I understand what he was talking about and that what he was saying is correct.

Does this sound right to the tile gurus?
