shower 'curb'

Does a shower base have to sit flush with the back wall or can it sit a few inches forward to give more shoulder room? Everyone tells me this won't work and will cause problems.I had pictured a 'curb' between the base and wall. This will be replacing a tub. Anyone have any advice?
