Can anyone tell me the minimum amount of space required between the edge of a pool table and the wall?

Depends upon the size of the table and the size of your cue....

I sort of grew up with a pool table in more or less an efficiency apartment .. 12 foot wide room wasnt enuff to avoid banging on the walls. 8 foot ceiling wasnt enuff to avoid blue chalk marks up there either.
