Question on digging a basement...

Posted by auntieknits (My Page) on

I have a silo basement under my house and I was wondering if I would make it into a bigger finished basement, would I really need to jack up the house? My house was built in the 1920's 1,200 sq ft. I was also wondering an approximate cost? How much of it could I do myself? I live in western, WI. Thanks!

RE: Question on digging a basement...

Not sure what a silo basement is--though I have seen homes that have a (decommissioned) missile silo in the basement.

It's simplest to jack up the existing home, then excavate and build a new basement under it. Alternatively, you can deepen the existing basement and underpin in sections. But this will require a lot of hand labour and take much longer. (Previous thread at GW on this topic.)

In many circumstances, it will be cheaper to add on abovegrade space.
