Is Basement carpet underlayment necessary?

| Hi, I'm working on finishing my basement and am going to put down some hightraffic burber type carpet. What kind of underlayment should I use, if any?
I have a level poured concrete floor right now. Should I install a sub-floor like Dri-cor? Should I use a carpet pad or just install directly on the concrete. Cushion under the carpet isn't a real concern.

| I was going to install carpet similar to what you are talking about in my basement, but decided to go with carpet tiles. When I was considering regular carpet I was told NOT to use a carpet pad in the basement and to lay it directly over the concrete. Dri-cor would make the floor warmer I imagine, but it's ok to lay it directly over the concrete. |

| If you go with traditional carpeting follow the manufacturers recommendations for padding. Otherwise you may void the warranty. Mike |

| An underpad directly on the concrete will only trap the water vapour that is constantly travelling through virtually all basement floors and will eventually create a mould problem. Be sure the carpet backing too is porous--jute or nylon. Just glue it down. NO rubber-backed carpeting. |
