Is Basement carpet underlayment necessary?

Hi, I'm working on finishing my basement and am going to put down some hightraffic burber type carpet. What kind of underlayment should I use, if any?

I have a level poured concrete floor right now. Should I install a sub-floor like Dri-cor? Should I use a carpet pad or just install directly on the concrete. Cushion under the carpet isn't a real concern.

I was going to install carpet similar to what you are talking about in my basement, but decided to go with carpet tiles. When I was considering regular carpet I was told NOT to use a carpet pad in the basement and to lay it directly over the concrete. Dri-cor would make the floor warmer I imagine, but it's ok to lay it directly over the concrete.

If you go with traditional carpeting follow the manufacturers recommendations for padding. Otherwise you may void the warranty.

An underpad directly on the concrete will only trap the water vapour that is constantly travelling through virtually all basement floors and will eventually create a mould problem. Be sure the carpet backing too is porous--jute or nylon. Just glue it down. NO rubber-backed carpeting.
