Has anyone built a basement in Texas?

I recently closed on a house built in the 1980s and I will need to do an addition in a couple of years. I am trying to have a rough plan for the layout of the addition as I am currently doing a lot of outdoor work around a backyard pool and don't want to get my backyard updates in the way of the addition.

Having moved back to Texas from the midwest, I miss my basement primarily for storage. Also being back in the land of tornadoes makes the basement look like a great idea. But, as you may know, there are VERY few basements in Texas.

Has anyone built a basement in Texas? Thoughts about digging one for an addition? I am guessing we will do about 800 square feet in the addition.
