If you mean recessed lights, they are fine for certain uses. How you use the space will dictate the lighting.
When I finished my basement I used recessed lighting, wall sconces and flourescents. When the kids played down there the flourescents were usually on. Listening to music or TV the recessed/sconces were on.
In the recessed cans you can use spots or floods.
