 o
insulating stone foundation above grade?

We have a 100+ year old house with a stone foundation. We do not have water problems; however the walls are damp starting below grade. We built the studs 1-2 inches from the stone wall and are planning to use dummy vents to improve ventilation. As well we are using the mold resistent drywall. We were planning not to insulate. Our contractor wants to insulate the exterior joists and the stone foundation above grade with fiberglass batts. Should we or should we not insulate? Any suggestions and advise would be appreciated.

Insulate, but don't use fiberglass. Any air movement between the insulation and the stone foundation wall could potentially lead to condensation. Use something that will prevent the movement of air between the fiberglass and the foundation wall. A very good option is to spray in closed cell foam insulation.
