It depends on whether you want to emphasize them or not, and that depend on the overall plan and use for the room.

I've seen them painted, covered with faux columns, boxed out and tiled, turned into a pool cue holder.....all manner of things. I had them integrated into a long, tall bookcase. Depends what you're doing with the room. A pic or more details would help.
