Slab Insulation

I'm hoping someone can help me with some ideas on how to insulate our basement. We have a big basement room which is about 13' wide by 40' long. It used to have some random linoleum and loose carpet on it, but we have pulled all that out and are considering our options to finish the floor. We are leaning towards carpet for comfort and warmth, or possibly some faux wood for looks and easy cleaning. However, since the area is so cold, we would like to insulate the slab before putting the final flooring product down. Do you have any suggestions for the best way to do this? What products are best? What R-value should we be looking for? Would you suggest carpet or "wood" - and why?
