Waterproofing Basement

We are installing extruded polystyrene foam on the basement walls prior to finishing them as suggested by a home improvement website. Is it necessary to paint the walls with drylock paint prior to installing the foam or is this unnecessary expense? Home built in 2007. Basement has drainage to daylight. There are no water problems, just dampness.

No.

But keep in mind that the XPS is insulation, not waterproofing.

I have the same question as you. So what did you choose? What did you use to insulate the rim joists? I plan on using the foam cut out for each rim joist and then use Great Stuff to seal it. As for the walls I am either going with just the water proofing paint or foam. Not sure yet.
