At what point can call the cops

I can hear my neighbor's tv/stereo through the wall. If I turned up my tv enough to cover up the sound of the one neighbors noise, I am afraid that I will annoy my other neighbor. Last night, I actually called the manager about it, and he came out to talk to them. They got louder after he left. The way their tv is situated, you cannot hear it outside, but it is definitely audible, especially bass inside. I am going to tell the manager they got worse after he left. But I was also wondering if I can call the police for inside noise, especially if the neighbors make it sound as if I am having a party in my living room too. I am also going to check city ordinance today. Please help with any advice. I just want to enjoy my living room stereo/tv at a reasonable level. Thanks.

Have you talked to the neighbors? If not you should. Odds are they don't realize how loud it is in your apartment.

If you don't want to talk to them then keep calling the manager. Next time have the manager come into your apartment before he visits theirs so he can hear it then have him come back into your apartment so he can hear that they turn it even louder after he leaves.

The police have better things to do than chase people with loud TV's and even if you called them, the neighbors would only turn it back up after they left too.

also, hang a carpet on that wall!

yes, i know you shouldn't have to... but living in an apt has some compromises.

If they're not real jerks, it's sometimes a good idea to ask the neighbors to listen to to the volume level in YOUR apartment.

I haven't QUITE done this, but I *have* been very specific about why I thought it was too loud:

"I cannot hear the person on the other end of the phone conversation"

"I cannot hear my own stereo set at volume level 5 even though it is 8 inches from me"

I have also said, to one guy, "I don't want you to turn it OFF; I want you to turn it down." I even said to him, "I don't mind hearing some of your music through the wall--but I need to be able to talk on the phone."

To the bridal-shower hostess (who was normally VERY quiet), I said, "I don't mind hearing your music bleed through the wall, and I understand it's a special occasion, and I want to you know I enjoy living next to you. But I just want to be able to HEAR my own stereo."

In both situations, they responded, I think because my explanation was so specific--that idea that I could not even HEAR my own stereo or phone hadn't occured to them.
