ever had an apartment w/o a dishwasher?

What (if anything) did you do about it? I've been in my apartment for almost a year now and I finally got a dishwasher. It didn't come with one, but there is nothing in the lease that prohibits owning a dishwasher. I got a portable and I absolutely adore it. It adds to my minimal counter space AND saves me a ton of time in the kitchen! Though I'm only one person I use a lot of dishes, especially with baking. Call me lazy (busy is more appropriate) but I don't enjoy hand washing. Now I know my dishes are sanitary and the work I have to do to get tbem that way is minimal. Plus, since I got to choose my.machine, I got a better one than the cheapos they usually slap in apartments. I've had it for three days and I've already used it 4 times. Everything comes out spotless and I do not "wash" them first. What an improvement to quality of life. If I wasn't just outside the laundry room, I'd look for portable clothes machines as well. Just wanted to share my news with my fellow apartment dwellers! Thanks

I had an apartment once without a dishwasher -- never again! I hate handwashing dishes. It was just too time-consuming. I made sure every apartment after that had a dishwasher.

Be careful what you ask for

I could talk about it all day! Mine is a GE Nautilus Convertible/Portable. I put a review of it on Epinions and I'm including the link. Since I've only had it for a week I haven't noticed any increase in my electric bill. I use it every other day, so I'm sure to see a rise in the bill. However, I have a gas stove, no washer/drier, and a flat rate water bill so my electric bill is usually 30 bucks. Even if it goes up to 100 dollars I don't care. The time and energy this machine have saved me is worth it! Plus all the fun I have playing with it. I now enjoy something I used to dread! I PROMISE the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to get a dishwasher if you don't have one. Mine was a 400 dollar model that I got on Craigs List for just 100 bucks. I say get one to anyone who doesn't have one. If you do get a portable, you can take it with you when you move so you really have nothing to lose!

Wow, you are enthusiastic! What could you possibly do with it other than load it and turn it on? :)

I had a kenmore portable that I liked a lot.

And I've heard of countertop dishwashers; I used to be on a forum w/ someone who had the Danby model and liked it a lot.

There are 18" portable dishwashers as well, not many but some.

RE: ever had an apartment w/o a dishwasher?

Congrats on your Craigslist find! I have always been leary of buying appliances used. One never knows if they are going to work or not.

When I was an apartment dweller I once bought a Sears portable, 18" slim floor model. I did not like it and returned it. If you are considering a portable dishwasher check the water pressure from your sink. It has to be at a rate of a certain number of gallons per minute or the DW won't function properly. Also, they do not just attach to any faucet type and one must either buy an adapter or put in a whole new faucet. Just something to consider when buying one of these........
