Any Portable Air Conditioning Recs?

Posted by tangogirl (My Page) on

I live in a NYC apt and don't want to install a big window air conditioner. Does anyone have any experience with portable ac units? DeLonghi, Haier, Sharp, and other companies make them now, but there aren't a lot of reviews out there. The living room where I would like to use a portable AC unit is 13x21.5 feet and is on the sunny side of the street. Thanks for any comments!

I had a friend who bought one but she really didn't like it because it had a pan of water that needed to be emptied quite often - more than once a day in humid conditions. It also had a hose at the back (similar to a dryer) that needed to be vented to a window. NOT very attractive at all in a room unless there's a place you can hide it well.

We had a Royal Sovereign Portable Air Conditioner.

It worked ok but was noisy when it changed cycles. If we had to do it over again, we would buy a Haier instead. I've seen them at Target, they are less expensive as well. See comments (link below) from those who have owned them.

I have an Amcor Plasma and it's been great. Yes, it has a hose, but it also has a system to "atomize" the condensation out the hose - so no pan to empty!

You should try a sunpentown. I have used them before and they come with my recommendations.

Portable air conditioners are great idea to complement the existing central air conditioning systems. But if you are looking for one that also can contribute to reduce the risk of the Ozone depletion, it is better to choose one that use non-Freon refrigerant.
