Terrible Tenant

Hello, my parents are the landlords of a house that's split in two. For a long time we've been having trouble with one of the tenants. He's never on time for paying his rent. Recently, he's begun to claim to have paid for rent without actually doing it. When we tried to evict him he filed a lawsuit. We didn't know this, but they found that the house is not registered as two units. So now they say we have to pay him $5000 and let him stay rent free until June. Is this right? And it seems he still doesnt have to pay for the rent he previously squelched on. Does anyone know anything about this? Please help.
