Update! Re: Harassment from New Owner

| I faxed a letter to my local congressman about the harassment taking place at our complex. He contacted the city attorney, who then contacted me and told me it was illegal for them to enter the apartment to perform renovations when I have not agreed to them. I didn't understand the law, but apparently, you have to agree to repairs. UNLESS they are emergent such as water leaks, then they have the right to enter.
I contacted the owners with this information, and the attempted to harass me further. I finally received a letter from them stating that they will not be performing renovations in our apartment until we have vacated at the end of our lease! I feel as if I won a small battle.
At least I may have some peace while packing! Thanks all! |

| Great idea on contacting your congressman. I contact mine regularly with politcal issues but never thought about your type of problem. Congrats!!! |

| I was surprised to get a response as well! Someone with Housing suggested that I write my congressman. I almost didn't, thinking that my particular situation wouldn't matter to Mr. Stark, however, he certainly took action and went to the right channels for me, and very quickly. Most of our other tenants left here have done the same to protect themselves as well. Sometimes the law really does protect us renters. If anything, this situation has taught me to know the laws, know my rights, read through an entire lease and understand what is on it before signing it, and know who you are renting from! I shamefully admit that in my years of renting I have bypassed reading some of the fine print on my leases! |
