Help with appliance choices

Posted by almagh (My Page) on

So far I am considering the following for our family of 6 (three boys 13, 10, and 8):

rangetop - Wolf 36" with griddle
we use a removable griddle now daily for pancakes, sandwiches, etc.

fridge - Electrolux Icon 36" CD
seems to have more space as far as the CDs go

dishwasher - Electrolux Icon or mid-range Miele
The Electrolux is rated at 45db and would match some of the other appliances (not that matching is most important)

top oven - Advantium 240

bottom oven - Electrolux Icon
I really like the pullout racks

microwave - Sharp drawer
DH is convinced we need this in addition to the advantium. Or should I get a microwave and a speed oven instead of the Advantium?

icemaker - Electrolux Icon
Only because it would match. Is there a better one for the same price or less?

Can't help with all choices..

We are very happy with our Miele DW. We have the optima series that is fully integrated with a panel. We have had it for about a month and we like the cleaning results and the design of the cutlery tray (some people hate it, we like how it gives us more room on the bottom). I haven't seen the Electrolux - but Miele DWs are very popular on this forum because most people consider them the best.

We looked at ice makers but eventually passed.. When we were looking around most people recommended u-line as the ice maker of choice. That being said, one of the reasons we passed on an ice maker was how "wasteful" it seemed since they basically run 24x7 making ice and allowing it to melt. So I would consider taking a look at u-line.

Also, if you consider fully integrated for your ice maker and dishwasher they don't have to match your other appliances..

I'm sorry but I think that fridge is going to be too small with a family with 3 growing boys. Any way you can go larger? Or perhaps a second inexpensive fridge/freezer in the basement to take care of overflow?

Similarly, if it were me, I would buy, in addition to the DW, one dish drawer just for the glasses. DW's these days have less capacity than the older ones due to added insulation for energy savings and less noise. I think you will find that you will not have enough DW space with 3 boys and all their glasses. One dish drawer would be just the thing. Just my $.02.

Thanks for the replies. I will look into the U-line icemakers.

The Electrolux DW is rated quieter than the mid-range Miele and I was concerned about the Miele not getting the silverware clean from comments that I read.

We have a full-size fridge and freezer in the wall-in pantry and a full-size fridge in the garage for drinks. I know the CD will have less space than my current fridge, but the difference in the fridge space is only .8cuft. DH wanted an under the counter beverage cooler, but I talked him out of it. The garage is not that far to fetch a drink.

RE: Help with appliance choices

Will you like trying to clean the griddle in place? When I considered a griddle, my trusted appliance salesman cautioned that it would never look clean/like new after the first use. So, I have a cast iron 2-burner griddle/grill pan that sits on my 8-burner Wolf rangetop. I like the flexibility... I can use it vertical or horizontal and on any of the burners, depending on what else we're cooking, and have all 8 burners free if I don't need the griddle. I like that I can take it to the trash to dump crumbs, or the sink to clean it when necessary. Just 2 cents worth on that.

You asked if you should get a micro and a speed oven instead of the Advantium...Isn't the Advantium a speed oven? Will you need to use a microwave while the Advantium is in use? The Sharp drawer micro seems very nice, but expensive if it doesn't get used.--And maybe worth it if it does and you don't have a good location for another type.

Do you like the look of the Advantium stacked with the Electrolux? I didn't look at the 2 together, so I'm just asking. I do know there are matching Monogram ovens and Advantiums, and the Monogram ovens have 3 nice full-extension racks (that can stay in during self-clean) and I'm pretty sure the Monogram ZET1 was roomier than the Electrolux wall oven.

It sounds like you'll have a nicely appointed kitchen. Best wishes.

RE: Help with appliance choices

We have a Miele dishwasher going on 5 years... and absolutely love it still. Sister has had one for 7 years...the "bare bones" model back then. No problems ever for either of us!
I use 1 tablespoon only of Cascade powder and keep the Jet Dry full.
Before the Miele, we had gone through two dishwashers in 8 years.
Nothing beats a Miele dishwasher. Don't go American,...sorry to say. Even my trusty appliance repairman told me that American appliances are purposely built to last four or five years, unlike the days of our Mothers and old Kitchenaids. In other words, "They ain't built like they used to be".
Also have Miele Masterchef double ovens for one year. Excellent and couldn't be happier.
