I replaced my 42" side by side two years ago when I remodeled. I bought it in 1999. It was perfect. I never had a day of trouble with it. I just didn't want a side by side anymore and wanted everything to be new. If this can be had at a great price, I would grab it.

I haven't heard anything about SubZero no longer being good. What is true is that the competition has raised itself enough that there are quite a few lower priced competitors who have raised their games enough that there's no longer a gaping gulf. Still good, yes. Worth the additional price? Only you can judge.

Additionally, I think I've read that SZ are slower to embrace some new technologies, presumably to maintain a continuity of doing what they do well. A number of years ago, there were a lot of repair issues relating to a bad batch of copper tubing which started failing several years after installation. Once SZ figured out what was going on, they made good on the repairs. Whether you think that these points make them less good is up to your own judgment and ideals.

The question is what is a fourteen year old used SubZero worth? It should have plenty of life left in it. Certainly as many years as a Home Depot fridge, from what I've heard. If you have qualms, check with SubZero. Find out what servicing will cost you if something goes screwy in moving and installation. They may have good advice.

Actually the average life expectancy of a refrigerator is approximately 15 years. Doesn't matter if you paid $600 or $6000.

Some will answer back that they have had theirs 20 years but I can probably find where the same model only lasted 10 years.

Think of it as buying a car with 150,000 miles.
Will it go 200K ? Maybe, maybe with some repairs, maybe with alot of repairs, maybe not at all.

Mine is 1999 and still fine. My Mom and Dad's Philco (purchased 1952) is still fine, too.

Thanks all. They are asking $1200 for it but I think they'll take less....It's in perfect condition but I'm thinking I'm going to go with an all refrigerator and get a chest freezer...

This is all for an inbetween...we will be renoing our house in a year or less and the future kitchen will have an all fridge and an all freezer, and then a second fridge.... so now I'm either getting the second fridge or half of the all sets...
