Built-in ice-maker runs very hot

We have had one before and I don't remember it running this HOT. I know they are not efficient; I didn't expect that. Our old one had been broken for about 2 years before we remodeled the kitchen and replaced it with a new one. Same brand and type as old one - a Kitchen Aid with built in pump.

I can feel the heat just walking by and the drawers and all cabinet material near it is all very hot.

Again, not expecting efficient, but I'm wondering if there is something wrong with it. Are there tolerance levels regarding the amount of heat that is acceptable? Is there a wrong way that the contractor could have installed it that is causing this?

I got out the install manual and I was here and it doesn't seem like there were any mistakes made. The cabinet maker followed what the install guide said to do as far as the size of the cabinet and all that.

What is the actual temperature? Where on the machine? They create cold by removing heat, so they should be warm to hot when in use. Just not burning hot to the touch.

I haven't measured th actual temperature. The cabinetry is warm to the touch. The unit is built in but I can still stick my hand on it in various places. It's very warm, but not so hot that I have to pull my hand away.

I just don't remember my old one being this hot. I'll try to find something I can take the temperature with.

I'm wondering if your cabinets have any ventilation around the ice maker. If air is trapped in there, even if there is enough space around it, eventually the heat given off will cause everything to get warm. I wonder if your old ice maker had some kind of cooling fan to blow heat out around the available cracks. Newer stuff is made more energy efficient which means more insulation and less energy use. Could that be a cause?
