How much waste heat should a gas range emit?

Just installed a brand-new GE JGS750SEF slide-in range. Seems fine, except that, when baking, the vents on the top rear (see photo below) get incredibly hot - too hot to touch. If you hold your hand over them the heat radiating out feels like an actual space heater.

I contacted GE and they said "this is normal". Well the gas range it replaced certainly didn't emit this kind of heat.

Googling around I've seen a few other people complaining about this with this range and others from other manufacturers. It seems like this is becoming more common. It seems crazy to me because all that waste heat must make the oven inefficient as well inconvenient. I'd swap it out for a different range, but no one seems to talk about which ranges do this and which ones don't.

Any thoughts?
