Looking at vacuum cleaners under 300.00 for a house with very little carpeting. Still I want it to clean and if at all possible, not noisy So far I have returned a Kenmore and a Hoover wind tunnel. How would you rate yours (mfg, model no) for these two important items. Sure wish they would sell vacuums with the db rating listed.

Make sure that you get one that has a HEPA filter. The filters are expensive (about $65), but they last a long time. Without one, you're just redistributing some of the dust back into the house. About noise, the stronger the suction, the louder the noise. I think that's unavoidable. I think the only way you can get a really quiet system is a central vacuum cleaner with the motor in the garage, basement, or attic. But they are a good deal more costly than your top limit. I would check Consumers Reports. They are not the last word, but they are a big help in steering you in the right direction. Most public libraries have it.

Cleaning and noise.... MIELE, MIELE, MIELE.... you will spend more than you want to, but it is IMHO they are worth their weight in gold. They have a smaller canister version now which cleans just as well as the larger ones, is lighter, and less expensive. You may want to check that option out. I have been through endless lesser vacuums. I now own 2 full size Mieles (one for each floor) and could not imagine life without them. Good luck with your search.

You mentioned that you returned a Kenmore and a Hoover Windtunnel. Those are general brands and models. Hoover has a series of Windtunnel uprights, canisters, bagged and bagless vacuum cleaners. I do not know which vacuum cleaners you returned. The Hoover S3670 Windtunnel Anniversary Edition bagged canister is not as loud as some other Hoovers. What I would suggest you do is look at canister vacuum cleaners with power nozzles, because you said that you have very little carpeting You are going to have a hard time finding a very quiet vacuum cleaner for under $300. The Miele canisters will be the quietest vacuum cleaners. Then there is Bosch, SEBO, Simplicity, Riccar and the Hoover S3670 canister. The S3670 is also sold as the Royal, but with a different color scheme and power nozzle. It will also be priced higher than the S3670. For your price range, take a look at the Hoover S3670. It will do a very good job of cleaning your carpeting, plus with the included floor attachment, it will clean your floors quickly and easily. The cleaner has a lot of good features like very good filtration. It also moves about easily and has a long hose. It also comes with a decent warranty of 3 years. It can be found from $240-$300. Something to remember is that you do not have to get a vacuum cleaner with the best filtration if you do not have allergies to what is being picked up by the vacuum cleaner. You just want one that will filter well. Miele even knows this and uses different levels of filtration for their vacuum cleaners |

I enthusiastically second the recommendation for Miele. Yes, you will spend more. It's worth it. You've returned two cheaper ones already, so that should tell you something.

I'll third the Miele recommendation. I bought one about 6 years ago; it cleans wonderfully AND quietly, and since I bought one with the parquet floor head, it actually seems to maintain the wood floors. Our floors needed polishing when we bought the house but we didn't think to do it before moving in. Well, far from getting worse, with the Miele used on the floors, everyone seems to think that our floors have been freshly polished every time they come over. Brilliant device.

I have two dogs, one of which sheds a great deal. I have hardwood throughout the house except for bedrooms. I have 2 Roomba's that I use daily (one in the front of the house, one in the rear) Since I got them I only use the dyson occasionally. What sold me on the Roomba's is that if I use one after I use the Dyson, the Roomba picks up alot of fine particle dust, but if I use the Dyson after I use the Roomba- it can't find a thing to pick up.

I have an electrolux twin canister with self cleaning filters. I got a refurbished one for about $200 bucks; the 'new' version is about $350 I believe. The refurb came with everything and looked and functioned like new. Great function on both bare floors and thick carpet-- and very quiet. Prior to this I'd used Hoover and Panasonic uprights of various configurations. The electrolux is twice (or more ) as effective and twice as quiet. I highly recommend a canister

I'll say a word against a Miele. I bought one about 4 years ago. It was a dream to work and cleaned well. However, this summer it just died. Wouldn't work anymore. I was ticked b/c I had spent almost $900 on it, thinking it would last 10 or 15 years. So I went and bought a $140 Eureka SmartVac (upright) that certainly cleans my carpets better and really cleans my hard floors just as well. Doesn't have all the little bells and whistles but that doesn't bother me. Has a HEPA filter and that's all that matters to me. Just my 2 cents.

Just curious, but did you ever find out what was wrong with the Miele? What did you do with it? (No, I don't need another.)

We called and from what my husband described to them, they said the electric board had gone out and it would be $300 for a replacement but they weren't promising that would fix it. We live in a rural area so have no local shops anymore to service it. I said for that much, I'll just buy a new vacuum. The Miele is currently sitting in my garage.

Thanks for the update, and sorry to hear about your Miele. It sounds like something for someone who likes to tinker.

I have two Eurekas, a canister bought at Sears (less than $100) and an upright bought at Lowes (less than $150). Both got great reviews on Consumer Reports. The canister is nearly 10 years old and I bought the upright about 6 years ago. I love the canister for small jobs and my cleaning lady loves the canister for her thorough, bimonthly cleans. She loves the Eureka so much that she has recommended it to other clients and threatened to quit if I try to replace it with an Orek or Dyson, with which she has experienced nothing but problems. Last week, I replaced the belt on the upright for the first time. It broke during a bimonthly big clean, but she was able to finish up with my handy little canister (Mighty Mite?)
